The essential takeaway
How to build a credible price per unit after RMB conversion, buying fees, freight, customs and Nigerian delivery.
Why product price is an incomplete number
A supplier's ¥18 unit price is only one part of your cost. Domestic China delivery, procurement service charges, inspections, international freight, customs, taxes, clearance, losses and local delivery can all matter. If you price inventory using only the listing screenshot, your retail margin may disappear.
Your first worksheet should separate costs that apply per unit from costs that apply per order. This allows you to compare ordering 20 pieces versus 200 without hiding fixed expenses.
Convert RMB at the actual quoted rate
The RMB-to-Naira rate displayed by a provider can vary by time, amount, payment route and service fee. Write down the quote's timestamp, validity, channel and whether the amount is inclusive of all charges.
Hypothetical example: 50 units at ¥45 cost ¥2,250. At an assumed ₦205/RMB, that is ₦461,250 for the goods. At ₦215/RMB, the same order becomes ₦483,750—a ₦22,500 difference before any other fee.
Five costs that build your landed price
Add procurement, delivery and inspection lines
With a 5% illustrative procurement fee on the goods amount of ₦461,250, add ₦23,062.50. If quoted Chinese delivery is ₦8,000, freight and related handling ₦72,000 and other applicable import/delivery charges ₦40,000, the total would be ₦604,312.50, or approximately ₦12,086.25 per unit.
Those numbers are teaching assumptions, not MY RMB AGENT's current rates or a real shipping quotation. Confirm the fee basis and each charge in the final invoice. Avoid double-counting clearance when freight is described as 'all in'.
Account for sellable units and operating costs
If two of the 50 units are defective, your effective landed cost per sellable unit rises because the same shipment cost is allocated over 48 units. Then consider marketplace commissions, customer delivery subsidies, adverts, returns and warranty replacements.
A gross markup is not a net profit. Calculate minimum viable selling price using realistic sales volume and give yourself room for discounts or slow stock.
Before setting a retail selling price
Use a sensitivity check before sending money
Recalculate your order at a weaker naira rate, higher freight charge and 3% to 5% defect scenario. If small changes make the order unprofitable, reduce quantity, negotiate supplier terms or choose a less freight-intensive product.
This approach is particularly important for low-priced bulky goods, fragile electronics and categories with unpredictable customs treatment.
