Bottom line
RMB is not always cheaper than USD. Ask for equivalent quotations, compare the final total in Naira, verify your recipient and understand what protection and fees apply.
01
Start with the supplier's invoice, not the exchange rate
Before discussing dollars or yuan, ask for a dated pro forma invoice naming the legal supplier, precise product, specifications, quantity, shipping terms, payment beneficiary and currency. A supplier who quotes USD for delivery to a Nigerian port and RMB for collection at a Chinese factory is not offering two directly comparable prices.
Ask the supplier to quote the same goods and delivery arrangement in both currencies where possible. Confirm whether the quoted total includes China domestic delivery, export paperwork, handling, platform fees or a deposit. Treat payment charges and procurement fees as separate lines.
02
RMB, CNY, yuan, USD: understand the terms
Renminbi (RMB) is the name of China's currency, yuan is the unit and CNY is the commonly used currency code for onshore transactions. A supplier may write ¥7,000, CNY 7,000 or RMB 7,000 to describe the same onshore amount. Offshore yuan is frequently denoted CNH, which can have a different traded market rate.
US dollars can be convenient for export contracts, but a USD quote may reflect the supplier's conversion assumptions. Paying in RMB is not always cheaper: what matters is the full amount in naira, the payment route and any commercial protection attached to the transaction.
03
Compare the total payable in Naira
Consider two illustrative quotations for identical goods and delivery terms. Quote A requests $1,000 at an assumed ₦1,500 per dollar with a ₦15,000 transfer charge: ₦1,515,000 total. Quote B requests ¥7,000 at an assumed ₦210 per yuan with a ₦14,700 payment charge: ₦1,484,700 total. Quote B saves ₦30,300 in this teaching example.
These rates are hypothetical, not live quotations, and another set of fees could reverse the result. Compare quote validity, any spread, provider charge, bank/intermediary deductions, beneficiary currency and the refund arrangement. For large orders, a small change in the FX rate can outweigh a seemingly lower service fee.
USD versus RMB: compare the all-in Naira total
USD quotation
- Supplier dollar amount
- Bank FX spread
- Transfer and intermediary fees
RMB quotation
- Supplier yuan amount
- NGN-to-RMB rate
- Payment-channel fees
Verify first
- Same exact product
- Same delivery basis
- Equivalent order terms
04
Choosing between Alipay, WeChat Pay and bank payment
Alipay and WeChat Pay may be available for eligible wallet recipients and specific payment types, subject to account verification, transaction limits and provider policies. A supplier's preference for a particular app is not proof that a Nigerian account can send that payment. Don't assume every personal wallet has identical daily limits.
A Chinese corporate bank transfer may be appropriate for a verified commercial invoice, but bank and intermediary charges, documentation and timing differ. An official marketplace checkout may provide order-level evidence or dispute procedures that disappear if you pay a private account off-platform. Check the exact protection terms rather than treating all transfers as interchangeable.
05
When buying on 1688
1688 was built primarily for the Chinese domestic market. Its checkout methods, supported verification and account eligibility differ from Alibaba.com's export-oriented purchasing process. WorldFirst describes World Pay as an officially supported cross-border route for eligible 1688 buyers; confirm requirements directly with the provider.
If you use a managed sourcing service, provide the product link, selected model and variant, quantity, warehouse details and seller's quotation. Clarify who places the marketplace order and how receipts, returns and refunds are handled. MY RMB AGENT can review eligible 1688 sourcing and RMB payment requests, subject to confirmation.
06
Know the difference between payment and procurement fees
A payment order converts funds and settles an eligible RMB recipient. Procurement includes additional work such as communicating with suppliers, placing or coordinating an order, and potentially arranging inspection or shipment. The cost structure should reflect which service you are actually buying.
MY RMB AGENT's stated standard procurement service fee is 5%, with rates or discounts for larger purchases subject to quotation. Confirm the calculation basis and ask whether Chinese shipping, quality inspection and Nigerian freight are charged separately. Do not apply a procurement percentage automatically to every standalone wallet-funding request.
Keep the transaction auditable
07
Verify the beneficiary to avoid payment diversion
Confirm the supplier's business name and beneficiary account using a channel established before you received the payment request. Scammers can impersonate legitimate staff, alter an invoice or insert a new wallet QR code into a conversation. Treat last-minute account changes as a reason for independent verification.
Keep your purchase order, final invoice, transfer instruction, confirmed recipient name, transaction receipt and supplier acknowledgement. For larger payments, agree a deposit and balance schedule tied to verifiable milestones or inspections rather than an unsupported full upfront transfer.
08
Budget freight and import compliance before paying
An RMB payment confirmation does not mean your goods are ready to reach Nigeria. Request Chinese domestic delivery costs, warehouse or consolidation charges, international freight and a clear statement about customs and final-mile delivery. For air freight, volumetric weight can matter; for sea freight, shipment volume and handling charges matter.
The Standards Organisation of Nigeria explains SONCAP documentation for its regulated products. Other agencies may regulate other categories. Confirm the product classification and applicable import procedures with official sources or qualified professionals before committing to a shipment.
09
A safer payment checklist
Make the supplier write down the exact model, quantity, currency, beneficiary, due date and delivery terms. Compare at least two complete methods in naira. Confirm that the proposed payment type is eligible; retain the complete evidence trail; and ask about refund procedures before sending funds.
When ready, MY RMB AGENT can review supported RMB payment channels, Alipay or WeChat funding requests and sourcing options. Share the verified supplier details and your required destination to receive a specific quote instead of acting on a generic exchange-rate estimate.
